Costume Making Fun!!

So I'm going to move away from food temporarily, I just noticed my last several posts have been about food and I guess it's a combination of me loving food in general, loving Halloween and having lots of pumpkin and nothing to do with it...so enough of that for now.

With the weekend approaching, and Halloween almost here, I'm getting ready to make this year's costume. It's not as elaborate as some from the past, but it will involve a bit of work. If you're anything like me, you want to be the only person to show up to the party in a certain costume so you're constantly trying to out-think your friends, or at least craft your own custom version of what you think is a unique idea! Below are a couple of costumes that I'm quite proud of, as well as the general instructions on how to make them.

Zombie Cheerleader & Zombie Jock - Inspired partially by Nirvana's Teen Spirit :)

You will need:

Cheerleader:
1 white jersey/cotton skirt
1 white tank top with full shoulder or 1 white t-shirt with sleeves removed
6 pieces of green felt - 3 a lighter shade than the rest
3-5 blood capsules (or more depending on how bloody you wish to be & reserve some for makeup)
a grassy lawn
dirt
2 green pom poms (I found mine at a dollar store)
Glue gun or Glue
Scissors

*Tip: Find your pom poms before you pick your felt colour, pom poms may be limited so you may want to match your felt to the pom pom

Jock:
1 white jersey - it there's a number perfect if not...
1 roll of black hockey tape
3-5 blood capsules (or more depending on how bloody you wish to be & reserve some for makeup)
4-6 pieces of felt in the darker green *you'll notice we ran out and improvised with green marker :)
a grassy lawn
dirt
and black jersey shorts to complete the ensemble
Glue gun or Glue
Scissors

Cheerleader:

Step 1) Cut both shades of felt in strips that fit nicely along the neckline of your shirt. If your shirt doesn't have a v-neck, cut one, or decide where you want to place the strips - reference some cheerleader photos for direction.

Step 2) Glue pieces along the neckline then set aside.

Step 3) Cut both shades of felt into narrow triangles the same length as the loose portion of the skirt. This gives the illusion that your skirt has two colours as cheerleader skirts often have.

Step 4) Lay the triangles on the skirt to determine appropriate spacing, moving from light shade to dark shade. Begin gluing pieces to skirt. Set aside to dry.

Step 5) Once both shirt & skirt are completely dry it's time to have some fun - go into your yard and rub your clothing against the grass to stain it - if the grass is too dry and not staining, throw a glass of water over it and proceed. Pay careful attention not to rip off your felt.

Step 6) Find some dirt and rub it into your clothing. Remember you just popped up out of the ground so you shouldn't be too clean.

Step 7) Pop open your blood capsules and spray them onto your clothing. If you don't mind the taste, break one open in your mouth, and spit it onto your outfit to create a blood spatter look. We also had some fun with bloody hand prints. Once complete, set aside to dry.

Zombie Jock:

Step 1) If your Jersey is not numbered, pick a number, then use the hockey tape to shape it out on the front and back of the Jersey.

Step 2) Cut 1 piece of your felt into a rounded triangle to place on the front and back ends of the arms. Keep in mind you will need large full-sized pieces for the tops of the shoulders. See above picture for reference. Glue your felt to the jersey.

Step 3) Position large pieces of felt to cover the tops of the shoulder (this is not pictured as we ran out of felt and Wal-mart didn't have any more...we improvised with green marker... Glue Felt.

Step 4) Chop the bottom half of your jersey enough to create a frayed look. Do the same to the sleeves.

Step 5) Once costume is completely dry, follow steps 5 through 7 from Zombie Cheerleader.

Finishing Touches:
Use Halloween makeup to create a pale complexion and dark shadows to blacken your eyes. Use some of the remaining blood capsules to spray blood over your entire body and most importantly down your chin & neck to give the illusion you've been feasting! For the ladies, ensure your hair is teased!

That's it!! Enjoy :)
